Ohio State Quarterback Kyle McCord Enters Transfer Portal After Playoff Disappointment

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback, Kyle McCord, has made a significant decision following the team’s miss of the College Football Playoff. McCord, who started all 12 games in the regular season, officially entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal and shared his decision on social media on Monday.

Expressing gratitude for his time at Ohio State, McCord thanked his teammates, coaches, and the Buckeye fanbase. Despite a successful 11-1 season, the Buckeyes’ hopes for the College Football Playoff were dashed with a loss to Big Ten conference rival Michigan Wolverines in the regular-season finale on November 25.

As a junior, McCord secured the starting quarterback position in the preseason, beating out Devin Brown. Throughout the season, he demonstrated his skills by throwing for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns and completing 65.8% of his passes. Despite these achievements, uncertainties loom over his future role with the Buckeyes.

Coach Ryan Day, addressing reporters in a news conference, remained noncommittal about McCord’s status as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season or even for the Cotton Bowl at the end of the month. Day emphasized that all quarterbacks on the roster, including Brown, Tristan Gebbia, and Lincoln Kienholz, would have opportunities to compete for reps.

McCord’s journey at Ohio State included backing up CJ Stroud in his freshman and sophomore years, with Stroud subsequently becoming the 2nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. McCord’s performance this season drew mixed reviews, showcasing both growth and challenges.

Reflecting on the season, Day acknowledged McCord’s progress, especially in critical moments, such as the dramatic comeback at Notre Dame in September. However, uncertainties about the starting quarterback position and the future direction of the team add complexity to Ohio State’s quarterback room.

As the Buckeyes prepare to face the Missouri Tigers in the Cotton Bowl Classic on December 29, the decision to enter the transfer portal by a key player like McCord adds an element of unpredictability to the team’s offseason dynamics. Ohio State, under Coach Day since 2019, faces the challenge of reshaping its quarterback strategy for the upcoming seasons.
