Elon Musk said that X will begin displaying news headlines following a short pause aimed at improving the platform’s visual attractiveness. In a post on X, Musk indicated that headlines will return alongside article previews in an upcoming release. But headlines will continue to be “overlaid on the image.”
“In an upcoming release, X will overlay the title in the upper portion of the image of a URL card,” Elon Musk stated on X.
Users had to engage with the URL card to access the title or view the headline straight after a graphic overhaul in October. This change comes in the wake of big firms such as IBM, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros, Discovery, Paramount, and Comcast/NBCUniversal withdrawing or temporarily suspending advertising from X. This action was taken since Musk’s association with far-right ideas remained, including praising anti-Semitic remarks.
Musk responded by suing the left-wing non-profit Media Matters, accusing it of contractual interference, corporate disparagement, and blocking possible economic benefits.
According to the non-profit, X “has been displaying ads for prominent brands” such as Apple and IBM alongside content promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. As a result, several high-profile brands suspended their advertising on X.
Last week, X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, addressed staff, emphasizing that “X is a platform for everyone” and calling for an end to discrimination by all parties. “X’s position has always been very clear: discrimination by everyone should STOP across the board — I believe that’s something we can and should all agree on.” X has also been quite open about our efforts to eradicate antisemitism and bigotry on our platform. It has no place in the world because it is ugly and wrong. She came to a complete stop.
